Gradebook2 FAQ: How do I use the "Weight items by points" setting?

If your gradebook is set up for weighted categories, one approach to establishing the relative weights of items in a category is to select the “Weight items by points” setting when adding or editing the category:

With this setting selected, the relative weight of each item added to the category will be automatically determined by the maximum points for the item.

Let’s say you set a maximum of 25 points for an item:

This item then has a relative weight of 25% in the category:

What happens if the maximum points for all items in the category does not total 100? In this case, the CLE automatically adjusts the relative weights of all items. Depending on whether the points total more or less than 100, the CLE decreases or increases the relative weights of all items proportionally, to equal 100% of the category.

Using the above example, let’s say you change the maximum points for the first item from 25 to 20 points--so the maximum points for all items now total 95 instead of 100. While the point maximum for each item does not change, the CLE increases the relative weight of each item in the category:

Keep in mind that you cannot weight items by points for a category that is set up for equally weighted items. If you select the “Weight items by points” setting, the “Weight items equally” setting will no longer be displayed.

You may use the “Weight items by points” setting in a points-, percentage-, or letter grade-based gradebook. For more information about using weighted categories, see What factors affect course grade when I use weighted categories?
